After a two-month vacation, the IA class felt different. It wasn’t like my conscious was at the beach while my body was at class…not at all. The class that I was expecting, the class from last semester, was simply remodeled. This semester we weren’t assigned a specific project; we were assigned to design one using freedom as our theme. It sounded straightforward in the sense that in groups, we would have the autonomy to choose an area of interest in order to develop a project; but, like I mentioned before, it is easier said than done.
I am not in disagreement with the idea of having the liberty to come up with a project; I simply needed to understand the nature of it. After the first class, I spent some time reflecting on the obstacles that can possibly occur. Losing focus, turning assignments late, lack of communication, these are all factors that make up for a dysfunctional working environment. This problem is most attracted when we have the autonomy and independency for a semester.
Yes, autonomy can be an issue for adolescents like myself. But, having the autonomy to delve into any issue, motivated me to pursue my interests. Rafael Franco, Cristobal de Losada, Cristobal de Osma, Sebastian Chrinos and I assembled in a group to focus on the theme freedom in the context of political opinions on world issues. In order to express freedom of opinion, we will be writing weekly articles on issues such as: ISIS, Putin and Russia, Iran’s nuclear development, Venezuela’s government, etc. Thus, these articles will be published on our own website. Our goal is to get our message out to the young people in Peru and in the World. This is goal isn’t set in stone, but it is what we are targeting in the future. To avoid problems in the future, we spent a few hours setting out specific roles for each student, and clarifying expectations. This project will be very demanding, so letting students know what they are expected to do is appropriate to address at the early stages of the project. Because I have been following politics these past few years, I am quite excited to start this project; I can’t wait reveal things that I have never touched before.
Now, the combination of the theme freedom with this project’s topic makes the product and the action more appropriate. Political Events under the curtain of freedom couldn’t have been better; for that reason I hope that makes things a little easier or more interesting. For example, in the case of Venezuela’s autocratic government, one can see that the citizens of that country cannot express their true political opinion with out the authority of the government. People are killed because they express their opinions peacefully on the streets. Media stations cover these stories once in a while and for a temporary moment, but then they move on and pretty much forget about the issue. These news stations sometimes forget that the most dangerous threat for the Venezuelan government is the world seeing the violence that the government forces on its people. These people have no voice, and the only way they can free themselves from this dictatorial government is by having access to multimedia news stations so they can share the reality they live in. If our common news sources can’t get those stories on the web and on the television, our our group’s autonomy and our desire will.
